New York Itinerary 2026

New York is more neighbourhood than city — and every neighbourhood tells a different story. This 5-day itinerary takes you from the Financial District's history to Harlem's jazz and gospel culture, via the museums of the Upper East Side, the High Line, and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Day-by-Day New York Itinerary

1

Manhattan Icons

🌅 Morning

Brooklyn Bridge walk

Start on the Brooklyn side (take the 4/5/6 to High Street-Brooklyn Bridge) for the best views walking towards Manhattan. Allow 30–45 minutes for the bridge walk. Dawn is magical.

☀️ Afternoon

Lower Manhattan + 9/11 Memorial

The 9/11 Memorial reflecting pools and museum are free to visit the outdoor pools (museum $29). Walk to the bull on Wall Street, Bowling Green, and the South Street Seaport.

🌙 Evening

Financial District dinner + drinks

The FiDi neighbourhood has transformed — excellent restaurants around Stone Street and in the World Trade Center complex. The bar on the 101st floor of One World Trade Center opens evenings.

Tip: Get a MetroCard ($33 for 7-day unlimited) or tap your contactless bank card. The subway runs 24 hours and is the fastest way around Manhattan.

2

Central Park + Metropolitan Museum

🌅 Morning

Central Park

Enter at the Bethesda Fountain (72nd St). Rent a Citi Bike or walk north to Harlem, south to Columbus Circle. Central Park is 843 acres — you could spend the entire day here.

☀️ Afternoon

Metropolitan Museum of Art (The Met)

One of the world's great museums: Egyptian Temple of Dendur, European paintings, armour, and the rooftop sculpture garden (seasonal, free entry to roof). Suggested donation: $30.

🌙 Evening

Upper West Side dinner

The UWS has excellent neighbourhood restaurants — try the lobster rolls at Luke's Lobster or Italian at Carmine's (family-style portions). Drinks at The Dead Poet bar on Amsterdam Avenue.

3

High Line + Chelsea + MOMA

🌅 Morning

High Line Park

The elevated rail-turned-park runs 1.45 miles through Chelsea and Hell's Kitchen (free entry, open 7am). Hudson Yards' The Vessel (booking required, free) is at the northern end.

☀️ Afternoon

MOMA — Museum of Modern Art

Monet's Water Lilies, Warhol's Campbell's Soup, Van Gogh's Starry Night — all in one building ($30 adult). Book online. The rooftop sculpture garden is open in summer.

🌙 Evening

Chelsea Market + Meatpacking District

Chelsea Market (75 9th Ave) is an excellent food hall for dinner. The Meatpacking District has top bars and rooftop clubs — Le Bain at The Standard is New York's most famous rooftop.

4

Brooklyn: Williamsburg + DUMBO

🌅 Morning

Williamsburg brunch

Take the L train to Bedford Ave. Brunch at Egg, Marlow & Sons, or Russ & Daughters Cafe. The Bedford Avenue strip and the streets south of it are lined with independent shops, galleries, and coffee roasters.

☀️ Afternoon

DUMBO + Brooklyn Bridge Park

DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) offers the famous Manhattan skyline view with the Manhattan Bridge framing the Empire State Building. Brooklyn Bridge Park is free and spectacular.

🌙 Evening

Brooklyn Bowl or Prospect Park Music

Brooklyn Bowl (live music + bowling + food) is one of New York's best entertainment venues. Alternatively, Prospect Park hosts free outdoor concerts in summer.

Tip: The A/C trains to Brooklyn (Far Rockaway / Rockaway Park branch) give you access to Jacob Riis Beach — free, local, and one of New York's best beaches. A 50-minute subway ride from Midtown.

5

Harlem + Departure

🌅 Morning

Harlem Gospel Brunch (Sunday)

The Sylvia's Gospel Brunch (Sunday, reservations required) is a once-in-a-visit experience. Alternatively, visit the Apollo Theater (exterior always, tours $20), the National Jazz Museum, and Marcus Garvey Park.

☀️ Afternoon

The Cloisters + Inwood

The Metropolitan Museum's medieval art branch in Fort Tryon Park (included with Met admission) has one of the most atmospheric museum settings in America — a reconstructed medieval monastery overlooking the Hudson.

🌙 Evening

Airport transfer

JFK: take the AirTrain + Jamaica station + subway (A or E train, $9 total, ~75 min from Midtown). LGA: Citi Bike/Uber recommended. EWR: NJ Transit from Penn Station ($18, 30 min).

Tip: Tipping is expected in the US: 20% at sit-down restaurants (often added automatically for groups of 6+), 15–18% for taxis and ride shares, $1–2/bag for bellhops and hotel porters.

Practical Information

Best Time to Visit

Spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November): mild weather (15–25°C), comfortable for walking. Summer is hot and humid but has outdoor events. December is magical with Christmas decorations despite cold.

Getting Around

NYC Subway (24hrs) is the best way around Manhattan and outer boroughs. 7-day MetroCard is best value. Citi Bike for short hops in good weather. Avoid taxis/Uber during rush hour.

Daily Budget

$150–300/day mid-range. NYC is expensive: $6 coffee, $20–40 lunch, $50–100 dinner. Museum costs add up (pass may be worth it). Budget: $80–120/day in hostels, halal cart lunches, and free park activities.

Top Tip

The NYC Attraction Pass (City Pass or New York Pass) can save 30–40% if you're doing several paid attractions. Check what's included before buying.
