Best Time to Visit New York City (2026)

New York City is a year-round destination, but spring (April–June) and autumn (September–November) offer the best combination of comfortable temperatures, lower hotel prices, and the city at its most vibrant.

Peak Season

June–August + December

Summer is hot and humid (30°C+) with heavy tourist crowds. December is magical with Christmas but hotels are expensive and streets are packed.

Shoulder Season

April–May & September–October

Best overall — mild temperatures (15–22°C), fewer crowds than summer, and the city is in full swing. Central Park and the High Line are spectacular.

Off-Peak Season

January–March

Cold (0–8°C) but authentic. Hotels are cheapest of the year, museums are quiet, and New Yorkers are in their element. Broadway shows are easier to get tickets for.

Planning Tips

The "shoulder" months of May and September are when New Yorkers say their city is at its best — tourists are fewer and the energy is perfect

Summer (July–August) is legitimately hot and humid — stay near air conditioning and visit outdoor attractions early in the morning

Hurricane season technically runs June–November but NYC is rarely directly hit — the main risk is flooding in low-lying areas like parts of Brooklyn

Hotel prices drop 30–40% in January and February — excellent time to visit if you don't mind cold
