Siargao Surf Trip Packing List 2026
Everything you need for surfing Cloud 9, General Luna, and Siargao's reef breaks. 21 essentials · 34 total items.
🏄 Surf Gear
Surfboard (shortboard 6'0"–6'6" for Cloud 9)
Cloud 9 is a world-class reef barrel — bring a board you know well. Longboards are also useful for the mellower breaks around General Luna on smaller days.
Padded boardbag
AmazonEssential for airline protection. Double up with towels in nose and tail. Siargao is a long journey — boards need solid protection.
Tropical surf wax
Amazon4–6 bars of tropical wax for 27–29°C water. Sticky Bumps Tropical or Sex Wax Tropical. Bring more than you think — less available on the island.
Wax comb
AmazonFor removing old wax and re-texturing between sessions.
Fin key + spare fins
AmazonBring both FCS and Futures keys. Pack a spare set — fin shops in Siargao are limited.
Leash (7ft for Cloud 9, 8ft if using longboard)
AmazonBring two leashes. Cloud 9 has strong current and you do not want to lose your board on a reef break.
Reef booties (1mm split-toe)
AmazonEssential at Cloud 9 — sharp coral at low tide makes entry and exit dangerous without protection. 1mm maintains board sensitivity.
Rashguard (short-sleeve, SPF 50)
AmazonSiargao UV is intense. Rashguard gives better protection than sunscreen alone for long sessions.
Nose guard / deck pads
AmazonReduces dings during transport in tricycles and boats around the island.
☀️ Sun & Skin Protection
Reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen
AmazonPhilippines reef ecosystems require reef-safe mineral sunscreen. Reapply every 90 min — the tropical sun is intense.
Zinc stick (nose + lips)
AmazonFull zinc for nose and cheekbones during long sessions at Cloud 9. Available in Siargao but better to bring from home.
Sunglasses (UV400, polarised)
AmazonPolarised lenses help read the reef and wave shape between sets. Essential on-island transport too.
Wide-brim hat
AmazonFor walks between breaks and boat transfers. Siargao sun is relentless 9am–4pm.
Aloe vera gel
AmazonSunburn is common on first days. Keep aloe on hand — availability on the island is variable.
🩹 First Aid & Health
Reef first-aid kit
AmazonCoral cuts at Cloud 9 are common and get infected quickly in tropical humidity. Betadine, antiseptic wipes, Steri-Strips, and medical tape are essential.
Insect repellent (DEET or Picaridin)
AmazonIsland mosquitoes are active at dusk and in less-developed areas. Dengue is present in the Philippines — protect yourself.
Swimmer's ear drops
AmazonDaily surf sessions in warm water = ear infections. Use drops after every session.
Ibuprofen / anti-inflammatory
Shoulder and wrist soreness from paddling Cloud 9's current-heavy lineup.
Oral rehydration sachets
AmazonIsland heat plus surfing dehydrates fast. Keep ORS sachets in your daypack.
Travel insurance (surf coverage)
Standard policies exclude reef surfing as extreme sports. Get surf-specific cover — World Nomads or EKTA both cover surfing.
👕 Clothing
Boardshorts (2–3 pairs)
AmazonQuick-dry essential. The island is hot and humid. Rotate between sessions.
Light cotton or linen shirts (3–4)
For evenings in General Luna. The vibe is relaxed island — no need for anything formal.
Flip flops
AmazonYou will wear these constantly. Leave dress shoes at home.
Light long trousers (1 pair)
Useful for motorbike riding and keeping mosquitoes off at dusk. Also for occasional visits to local towns.
Rain jacket (light)
The typhoon season (Aug–Nov) brings heavy rain. A light packable rain jacket is useful for motorbike rides and evening showers.
📱 Electronics & Connectivity
eSIM for Philippines
Airalo Philippines eSIM — from $8 for 3GB. DITO, Smart, or Globe networks. Works on arrival without swapping SIM.
Waterproof phone case / dry bag
AmazonFor boat transfers to the outer breaks and keeping gear dry in tropical downpours.
Action camera (GoPro/Insta360)
AmazonCloud 9 barrels are some of the most photogenic in the world. A GoPro chest or surfboard mount captures the session.
Portable power bank (20,000mAh)
AmazonPower cuts are occasional on the island. A large power bank keeps everything charged.
Universal travel adaptor (Type A/B)
AmazonPhilippines uses Type A and Type B plugs (same as USA). If coming from Europe or Australia, bring an adaptor.
🎒 Bag Setup
Boardbag (double or triple travel)
AmazonProtects 2–3 boards on the Cebu or Manila connection. Essential for the multiple flights and airport handlers on the way to Siargao.
Daypack (20–25L)
AmazonFor motorbike rides to breaks, carrying wax, reef kit, and water bottle. Keep it simple and waterproof.
Dry bag (10L)
AmazonFor keys, phone, and valuables at the beach. Essential at Cloud 9 where gear can get caught in water spray.
Compression packing cubes
AmazonKeep clothing organised. Laundry services are available in General Luna but pack light for the island lifestyle.
Siargao Surf Packing FAQ
Do I need a wetsuit for Siargao surfing?
No — Siargao water stays 27–29°C year-round. A short-sleeve rashguard for UV protection is all you need. Full wetsuits are uncomfortable and unnecessary in this heat.
Can I rent a surfboard in Siargao?
Yes — boards are available for rent in General Luna from around $10–15/day. However, the selection is more limited than Bali. For Cloud 9 specifically, you want a board you trust well — bring your own if possible.
Are reef booties necessary at Cloud 9?
Highly recommended. The reef at Cloud 9 is sharp coral and urchins. At low tide the entry and exit is over exposed reef. 1mm split-toe reef booties give you board feel while protecting your feet.
What is the best time to surf Siargao?
August to November brings the best swells driven by typhoon activity in the Pacific. Cloud 9 is most consistent and powerful during this window. The trade-off is that typhoons (July–October) can make the island uncomfortable or dangerous — monitor forecasts carefully.
How do I get to Siargao?
Fly into Sayak Airport (IAO) with Cebu Pacific or Philippine Airlines via Cebu (CEB) or Manila (MNL). Direct flights from Manila are available on some routes. Journey time from Manila is 1.5–2 hours by air. Book accommodation in advance — the island fills up during surf season.
