The Breaks

Pottuvil Point
Right-hand point breakIntermediate–Advanced
🚶 Short tuk-tuk ride from town

Long, walling right-hander up to 200m rides. Gets powerful at 6ft. Best at low-mid tide. The signature wave of Arugam Bay.

Whiskey Point
Right-hand point breakIntermediate
🚶 15 min north by tuk-tuk

More forgiving than Pottuvil — better for progression. Consistent. Can hold more swell before closing out.

Baby Point
Beach break / small pointBeginner
🚶 North end of Arugam Bay beach

Small, mellow waves ideal for beginners. Sheltered. The place to learn to surf if you're new — several schools set up here.

Okanda Point
Right-hand point breakAdvanced
🚶 40 min south, 4WD needed

Remote, pristine break. Rarely crowded. Big surf on big swells. Worth the effort for experienced surfers.

🏄 Surfboard Baggage Rules

Best Airlines
Emirates and Qatar Airways (full-service carriers with generous baggage — board in travel bag often within 23–30kg allowance without surcharge); SriLankan Airlines (sports equipment surcharge ~$50–75 each way pre-booked); AirAsia (Sports equipment add-on ~$30–40 from KUL).
Avg Cost
Budget $40–80 each way if using budget carriers. Emirates/QR business class often includes sports equipment free. Board hire in Arugam Bay is good — $8–12/day for shortboards and funboards.
💡 Tip: Arugam Bay has an excellent hire scene — for a first visit, hiring locally is fine. The town is small and surf shops are easy to find. If you have a specific high-performance board, bring it — but budget for airline surcharge.

About Arugam Bay Surfing

Arugam Bay on Sri Lanka's east coast is one of Asia's best-kept surf secrets, offering long point breaks, a relaxed hippie-surf vibe, and access to some of the continent's least crowded waves. The main break at Pottuvil Point fires April through September, with consistent right-handers peeling for up to 300 metres. Combine with a Sri Lanka wildlife safari or cultural triangle tour for an epic trip.

✨ Luxury Path

Kottukal Beach House by Jetwing (luxury boutique near Arugam Bay). Boutique eco-lodges have grown significantly. Sri Lanka's luxury surf scene is still emerging — expect beautiful accommodation but not Maldives-level resort service.

💰 Budget Path

Arugam Bay guesthouses $15–30/night. The town has a strong backpacker surf culture with budget cafés and equipment hire everywhere. Total cost of a budget surf week here is very low.

Surf Camps & Schools

Arugam Bay has a laid-back surf camp scene. Aloha Surf Resort, Hideaway Resort, and Spice Trail offer packages. Some offer multi-week camps specifically for improvement surfers. The region's low cost of living means surf camps are genuinely affordable ($40–80/day full board + coaching).

Tip: Book surf camps at least 4–6 weeks in advance during peak season — the best schools fill up quickly, especially around competitions and swell events.
