Surfboard Airline Fees 2026

Every major airline flying to Bali, Siargao, Maldives, Mentawai, and beyond — surfboard policies, fees, and tips.

Always pre-book board fees online — airport rates are 2–3× higher on budget carriers.

🎒

Carry fins in your carry-on. They're fragile, valuable, and always get damaged in checked bags.

⚠️

Maldives seaplanes do not accept surfboards — arrange board shipping or resort rental in advance.

Airline Surfboard Policies — Asia & Indian Ocean

AirAsia

$30–$50 per sector

Routes: BKK, KUL, SIN → DPS, CGK, SUG

Limit: 23kg, max 190cm

💡 Pre-purchase online — airport rate is 2× the online price. Book early for lower fees.

Garuda Indonesia

Free

Routes: CGK, DPS domestic & international

Limit: 23kg per bag; board as 1 piece

💡 Best airline for Bali surf trips if flying via Jakarta. Weight limit is the constraint, not size.

Singapore Airlines / SilkAir

Free

Routes: SIN → DPS, MLE, many ASEAN hubs

Limit: Total dimensions under 292cm; weight within allowance

💡 Best full-service option for Bali. Book early — weight class is the only restriction.

Cebu Pacific

₱600–₱1,200 per sector (~$10–$22)

Routes: MNL, CEB, GEN → SGO (Siargao)

Limit: 20kg; max 200cm total dimensions

💡 Cheapest way to get a board to Siargao. Pre-book online — Cebu Pacific's fees are among the lowest in Asia.

Philippine Airlines

₱500–₱1,500 per sector

Routes: MNL → SGO, CDO, Various

Limit: 23kg standard; board as extra piece

💡 More reliable than Cebu Pacific for Siargao. Weight is the key variable — pack your board light.

Emirates

Free

Routes: DXB → SIN, BKK, MLE (connection routes)

Limit: 300cm max; within total weight

💡 Excellent for Maldives via Dubai. Most surfers can check a boardbag without paying extra. Double-check at booking.

Qatar Airways

$75–$150 per sector

Routes: DOH → SIN, BKK, DPS (connection routes)

Limit: 300cm max; 23kg

💡 Good connections to Indonesia and Maldives but surfboard fees are higher than Emirates.

Thai Airways / Thai Smile

THB 1,500–3,000 per sector (~$40–$85)

Routes: BKK → DPS, HKT, International

Limit: 23kg; max 200cm

💡 For Phuket surf trips: fly BKK–HKT with board as oversize. Pre-book and pay online.

Lion Air / Batik Air

IDR 50,000–100,000/kg over allowance

Routes: CGK, UPG → DPS, PDG (Padang for Mentawai)

Limit: 20kg included; board as extra piece

💡 For Mentawai via Padang. Pack your board light (under 15kg) and pay per-kg excess. Often cheaper than fixed sports equipment fees.

Maldivian / Trans Maldivian (seaplane)

Not accepted

Routes: MLE → Resort atolls (seaplane)

Limit: 15–20kg carry-on only; no oversized items

💡 CRITICAL: Maldives seaplane transfers do not accept surfboards. Arrange with your resort to ship boards via cargo boat, or rent boards at the resort. This is the most common Maldives surfing logistics mistake.

How to Fly with a Surfboard — Step by Step

1

Choose the right boardbag

Use a padded travel boardbag (double or triple) rated for airline travel. Pack old towels around the nose and tail. Single socks are not enough for international flights.

2

Check the airline's surfboard policy before booking

Policies vary widely — AirAsia charges $30–$50 per leg, while many full-service carriers include boards in the baggage allowance if under the weight limit. Always verify at booking, not at the airport.

3

Put fins in your carry-on

Fins are fragile and frequently damaged in checked bags. Remove all fins, wrap them, and carry them on. FCS2 and Futures fins fit easily in a carry-on backpack.

4

Declare your surfboard at check-in

Always declare your board at check-in. Do not try to hide it — oversize baggage fees apply regardless. Pre-paying online is usually cheaper than paying at the airport.

5

Carry a ding repair kit

Airlines damage boards. Pack a solar resin ding kit to fix pressure dings and cracks on arrival. Claim minor damage at the baggage counter immediately after landing.

Surfboard Travel FAQ

How much does it cost to fly with a surfboard to Bali?

It depends on the airline. AirAsia charges $30–$50 per sector for a surfboard as sports equipment. Garuda Indonesia includes boards in the baggage allowance if under 23kg. Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific typically include boards within the standard baggage allowance. Budget $60–$150 return for LCC (budget) carriers.

Can I take a surfboard as carry-on?

No — surfboards must be checked due to length. The shortest shortboard (5'4") exceeds most airlines' carry-on limits. Bodyboards under 150cm may fit in some carriers' oversized carry-on allowances, but surfboards cannot be brought into the cabin.

What is the maximum surfboard size allowed on airlines?

Most airlines allow surfboards up to 190cm (6'3") without extra-length fees. Boards over 190cm may incur additional oversized charges. A standard triple travel boardbag with 2–3 boards (up to 7' feet) usually measures under 200cm and is accepted as standard oversized sports equipment.

Is it cheaper to rent a surfboard in Bali or bring my own?

For trips under 10 days, renting in Bali is often cheaper once you factor in airline board fees. Rentals cost $5–$15/day for a shortboard. For trips over 10 days, or if you surf a specific shape, bringing your own board saves money and ensures the right equipment. Performance surfers should always bring their own board.

Does travel insurance cover surfboard damage by airlines?

Standard travel insurance typically covers baggage damage up to $500–$1,000. Check your policy's sports equipment clause — some policies exclude surfboards or require a separate "sports equipment" add-on. World Nomads and EKTA surf-specific policies cover board damage. Always file a claim at the baggage desk before leaving the airport.
