✈ Best Airport for Mentawai Islands Surfing
Fly into Padang (PDG) from Jakarta (CGK) or Kuala Lumpur (KUL). Most surfers pre-arrange transfers with their boat charter operator. Fast boats to Mentawai depart from Bungus Bay (~2hrs south of Padang). Land-and-boat packages typically include airport pickup. Public ferries to Tuapejat take 7–10 hours but are very cheap.

The Breaks
Widely considered one of the top 5 waves in the world. Long, perfectly shaped right-hander that barrels from 4ft to double overhead. Extremely shallow on the inside section — urchins and sharp reef. Best on a 4–6ft south swell at mid tide.
Short, incredibly fast and hollow. Gets heavy at 5ft+. Unforgiving wipeouts. Ultra-consistent. One of the best barrels in the world on its day.
Perfect, round-barreled left. Slightly more forgiving than HTs. Excellent for getting tubes. Gets very crowded as multiple boats anchor here simultaneously.
More forgiving entry point to Mentawai surfing. Longer, walling right. Good for surfers stepping up to reef breaks.

About Mentawai Islands Surfing
The Mentawai Islands off the west coast of Sumatra are widely regarded as the best surf destination on the planet. Hollow Trees (HTs), Rifles, Macaronis, and Lance's Right are breaks that top every surfer's bucket list — long, perfect barrels breaking over shallow reef in warm, clear water. The islands are accessed via liveaboard charter from Padang (PDG) — typically 8–12 hour boat crossings. Peak season runs April to October, with the dry southeast swell season producing the most consistent conditions. Surfers of all levels come, though the shallow reef breaks demand experience and respect.
Kandui Villas (ultra-luxury private island, ~$1200–2000/night). Mentawai Sanctuary. Private charter boats ($4,000–8,000/week for a full boat of 8–10 surfers). The elite end of Mentawai surfing is genuinely world-class.
Share charter boats $1,500–2,500/person/week (8–10 berth boats) — this is the most common format. Land-based Mentawai camps exist on Sipora island from ~$80–100/day. Not as cheap as Bali, but the surf quality justifies every dollar.
Surf Camps & Schools
Mentawai is boat-charter territory. Operators like Surf Mentawai, Perfect Wave Surfaris, and Mentawai Surf Resort dominate the market. A 7–10 day charter is the standard format. Boats anchor near the best breaks and wake you up when the surf is good. The experience is entirely different from land-based surf camps.
