About Amsterdam

Amsterdam is one of Europe's most captivating capitals — a city of just 900,000 people that punches far above its weight in culture, history, and quality of life. Its 17th-century canal ring, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, forms the beautiful backbone of a city built on tolerance, trade, and artistic excellence. The Dutch Golden Age produced Rembrandt and Vermeer; the 20th century produced Van Gogh and Anne Frank's diary — both legacies alive in world-class museums today.

The cycling culture is genuinely extraordinary. There are more bicycles (900,000) than people in Amsterdam, and the city's network of dedicated cycle lanes makes it easy and safe to explore by bike. Renting a bicycle and joining the flow of locals is one of the great travel experiences in Europe — gliding alongside canals, through the Jordaan's flower-lined bridges, past street markets and centuries-old warehouses.

Amsterdam rewards lingering. The Jordaan neighbourhood's brown cafés (bruine kroegen) — wood-panelled old Dutch pubs serving jenever (Dutch gin) and cold beers — are perfect afternoon haunts. The Albert Cuyp Market, the Noordermarkt organic market on Saturdays, and the Waterlooplein flea market offer authentic neighbourhood life. For day trips, tulip fields at Keukenhof (March–May), historic Haarlem (20 minutes by train), and windmills at Zaanse Schans are all exceptional.

Travel Tips · Amsterdam

  • Book the Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum, and Van Gogh Museum online weeks or months in advance — they sell out and there are no walk-up tickets in peak season.
  • Rent a bike on day one — the city is built for cycling and it's the fastest, cheapest, and most enjoyable way to see the canal ring and beyond.
  • Watch out for the cycling lanes — pedestrians who wander into bike paths are a hazard. The dedicated red lanes are for cyclists only and they move fast.
  • Stay in the Jordaan or De Pijp neighbourhoods for the most authentic local feel — cheaper than the canal ring hotels and walkable to all major sights.
  • Amsterdam in April means the Tulip Festival and Keukenhof gardens in full bloom — book accommodation 6 months ahead if visiting in spring.

The Netherlands is part of the Schengen Area. EU/EEA citizens need no visa. US, UK, Canadian, and Australian passport holders can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. From 2025, most non-EU visitors require ETIAS pre-authorisation (€7). Some nationalities need a Schengen visa applied in advance.

How do I get from Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to the city?

The Intercity Direct train runs every 10 minutes from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Centraal, taking just 17 minutes at €5.60. Taxis cost €35–50 and take 20–40 minutes. The bus is cheaper but significantly slower. Schiphol is one of the world's easiest airports to transit.

How many days should I spend in Amsterdam?

3–4 days lets you see the Rijksmuseum, Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House, the main canal ring, Jordaan neighbourhood, and Vondelpark. A week allows day trips to Keukenhof (spring), Haarlem, Delft, Rotterdam, or the Zaanse Schans windmills.

What is the best way to get around Amsterdam?

Cycling is the best way to explore Amsterdam like a local — rent a bike for €10–15/day. The tram network covers the centre efficiently. Walking is perfect for the canal ring. Avoid bringing a car — parking is extremely expensive and the city is not designed for it.

When is the best time to visit Amsterdam?

April and May are peak season — tulip fields bloom at Keukenhof and the city is at its most beautiful. September and October offer fewer crowds and good weather. Summer (June–August) is busy and pricey. Winter is atmospheric with Christmas markets but expect cold and rain.
