✈ Best Airport for Siargao Surfing

IAO
airport
Sayak Airport, Siargao Island (General Luna)
15–25 min to Cloud 9 by motorbike or habal-habal

Sayak Airport (IAO) is the closest option — small domestic airport served from Cebu (CEB) and Manila (MNL) via Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. Via Butuan (BXU) is also possible but adds 4h. Book airport-to-General Luna transfers with guesthouses in advance.

The Breaks

Cloud 9

Right-hand reefBeginner–Intermediate
🚶 Short boat ride

Longer, more forgiving wave than Cloud 9. Good for progression.

Stimpy's
Right-hand reefAdvanced
🚶 Boat

Thick, powerful right. Works best 4ft+. Much less crowded than Cloud 9.

Cemetery
Left-hand reefIntermediate

Consistent lefts on smaller days. Good when Cloud 9 is too big.

🏄 Surfboard Baggage Rules

Best Airlines
Cebu Pacific (surfboard as sports equipment ~PHP 700–1200/leg if pre-booked); Philippine Airlines (allows surfboard in checked baggage within 23kg allowance + sports fee PHP 500–800). Both require advance booking — don't just show up with a board.
Avg Cost
Budget PHP 1,400–2,400 each way (approx $25–45). Cebu Pacific promotions often include free sports equipment on fare sales.
💡 Tip: Book surfboard allowance online at least 24 hours before. The Cebu Pacific app lets you add sports equipment at checkout. Fins separately in carry-on — always.

About Siargao Surfing

Siargao Island has evolved from a remote surf outpost to one of Asia's most celebrated travel destinations while keeping its laid-back soul intact. Cloud 9's barreling right-hander is the headline act, but the island offers multiple breaks for all levels, stunning island-hopping, and a growing food and nightlife scene in General Luna. Peak surf season runs August–November.

✨ Luxury Path

Nay Palad Hideaway (exclusive island resort, ~$800–1500/night, boat access to multiple breaks). Dedon Island Resort. Private villa + dedicated surf guide packages increasingly common.

💰 Budget Path

General Luna guesthouses $15–35/night. Surfboard hire $10–15/day from shops along the Cloud 9 boardwalk. Most guesthouses can arrange habal-habal (motorbike taxi) transfers to breaks for ~PHP 50–100.

Surf Camps & Schools

Siargao's surf camp scene is smaller than Bali's but high quality. Kermit Surf Resort and Siargao Surfing Academy offer packages combining accommodation, daily guiding, and coaching. Expect $60–120/day for a full package. The Siargao Surfing Cup (September) draws the best local and regional competition surfers.

Tip: Book surf camps at least 4–6 weeks in advance during peak season — the best schools fill up quickly, especially around competitions and swell events.

More comfortable with luggage. Slightly slower than habal-habal on the main road.

🚐
