About Paris

Paris is one of those rare cities that lives up to every expectation — and then exceeds them. The French capital packs the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre, Notre-Dame, Versailles, and dozens of world-class museums into a remarkably walkable city on the Seine. Its 20 arrondissements each have a distinct character: the grand boulevards of the 8th, the bohemian Canal Saint-Martin in the 10th, the hip Belleville neighbourhood in the 20th, and the academic energy of the Latin Quarter.

Parisian food culture is foundational to French identity. A morning croissant from a neighbourhood boulangerie, a two-hour lunch at a classic brasserie, a picnic of cheese and wine on the banks of the Seine, or a Michelin-starred tasting menu — all are quintessential Paris experiences. The city's café culture invites you to slow down and observe: a simple café au lait at a pavement table is one of travel's great pleasures.

Beyond the tourist trail, Paris rewards the curious explorer. The covered passages (galeries couvertes), remnants of 19th-century shopping arcades, hide bookshops and artisan ateliers. The Belleville murals showcase world-class street art. The Marché d'Aligre buzzes with authentic neighbourhood life. Paris is a city that reveals itself gradually — and always has more to offer.

Travel Tips · Paris

  • Book the Eiffel Tower online in advance — queues can be 2–3 hours at the base. Summit tickets sell out weeks ahead in peak season.
  • A carnet of 10 Metro tickets or a day pass (Mobilis) gives great value for getting around. The Vélib' bike-share network is excellent for flat routes near the Seine.
  • Eat where locals eat — avoid tourist menus along the Champs-Élysées. Side streets in the Marais, 11th, and Batignolles have far better food at lower prices.
  • Museum Pass covers 50+ museums including the Louvre and Orsay with no queuing — worth it for visits of 3+ days.
  • Watch out for common tourist scams: fake petitions, the "ring found on the ground" trick, and bracelet vendors at Montmartre. Be politely firm and walk away.

France is part of the Schengen Area. EU/EEA citizens need no visa. US, UK, Canadian, and Australian passport holders can visit for up to 90 days without a visa. From 2025, non-EU visitors require ETIAS pre-authorisation (€7). Check your specific country's requirements before travel.

How do I get from Paris CDG Airport to the city centre?

The RER B train is the fastest and cheapest option at €13, reaching central Paris in 35 minutes. Taxis are metered, costing €50–70 depending on traffic. The Paris Metro does not serve CDG directly — take RER B to Châtelet-Les Halles and transfer.

How many days should I spend in Paris?

4–5 days lets you visit the Eiffel Tower, Louvre, Notre-Dame, Musée d'Orsay, Montmartre, and the Marais comfortably. A week allows for day trips to Versailles, Giverny (Monet's garden), or the Loire Valley châteaux.

Is Paris safe for tourists?

Paris is generally safe but pickpocketing is common, especially on the Metro, near the Eiffel Tower, and in Montmartre. Keep valuables secure, be aware of scams near tourist sites, and avoid poorly lit areas late at night. The city is well-policed and tourist-friendly overall.

What is the best area to stay in Paris?

The 1st–4th arrondissements (Marais, Île de la Cité, Louvre area) place you within walking distance of major sights. The 6th (Saint-Germain-des-Prés) and 7th (Eiffel Tower) are elegant and well-located. For nightlife and a local feel, the 10th and 11th arrondissements offer great restaurants and vibrant streets at lower prices.
