🏄 Surf Gear

Surfboard (shortboard 6'0"–6'6" for Uluwatu)

Or rent on arrival. Padang Padang is a barrelling reef — bring something you know well. Rental shortboards available from ~$10/day.

Padded boardbag

Amazon

Protects against airline mishandling. Double up with old towels in the nose and tail.

Tropical surf wax

Amazon

Pack 4–6 bars of tropical wax (sticky, rated for 24°C+ water). Sex Wax or Sticky Bumps tropical.

Wax comb

Amazon

For removing old wax and texturing fresh coats.

Fin key + spare fins

Amazon

Bring a FCS or Futures fin key. Pack a spare set of fins — airlines bend or lose fins.

Leash (6ft for Uluwatu, 7ft for fun)

Amazon

Bring two — comp-size and standard. Uluwatu current is strong.

Reef booties (1mm split-toe)

Amazon

Essential for Uluwatu and Padang Padang low-tide entry over sharp reef.

Rashguard (short-sleeve, SPF 50)

Amazon

More sun protection than sunscreen alone. Essential for Bali's intense UV.

Surfboard nose guard

Amazon

Protects against dings when stacked in vehicles and guesthouses.

☀️ Sun & Skin Protection

Reef-safe SPF 50+ sunscreen

Amazon

Bali bans oxybenzone — use reef-safe mineral sunscreen. Reapply every 90 min in the water.

Zinc stick (nose + lips)

Amazon

Full zinc oxide for the nose and cheekbones during long sessions. Tinted versions look less clinical.

Sunglasses (UV400, wrap-around)

Amazon

UV damage accumulates. Polarised wrap-arounds reduce glare when reading waves.

Wide-brim hat

Amazon

For walking to/from breaks and when not in the water. Bali sun is intense 9am–4pm.

Aloe vera gel

Amazon

For sunburn recovery. Available cheaply in Bali but good to have on arrival.

🩹 First Aid & Health

Reef first-aid kit

Amazon

Coral cuts at Uluwatu are common. Betadine (iodine), antiseptic wipes, Steri-Strips for lacerations.

Swimmer's ear drops (Domeboro)

Amazon

Bali surf = daily ear irrigation. Swimmer's ear is extremely common. Use after every session.

Ibuprofen / anti-inflammatory

For shoulder, knee, or wrist soreness from long sessions.

Oral rehydration sachets

Amazon

Bali heat + surf dehydrates fast. Keep ORS sachets for heavy session days.

Travel insurance (surf coverage)

Standard travel insurance excludes "extreme sports." Get surf-specific coverage — EKTA or World Nomads both cover surfing.

👕 Clothing

Boardshorts (2–3 pairs)

Amazon

Quick-dry essential. Bali is hot. Bring enough to rotate between sessions.

Light cotton or linen shirts (3–4)

For evenings in Seminyak, Canggu, or Uluwatu cliff bars. No need for anything formal.

Flip flops

Amazon

Wear these 90% of the time. Leave dress shoes at home.

Aqua shoes

Amazon

For rocky beach entries like Impossibles. Lighter than reef booties for casual sessions.

Light long trousers (1 pair)

Required at some temples (Tanah Lot, Uluwatu temple above the surf). Can rent sarongs at the gate.

📱 Electronics & Connectivity

eSIM for Bali / Indonesia

Airalo Indonesia eSIM — from $8 for 3GB. Works on arrival, no physical SIM swap.

Waterproof phone case / dry bag

Amazon

For boat transfers and paddling out to outer breaks. GoPro mounts on most helmets too.

Action camera (GoPro/Insta360)

Amazon

Mount on your surfboard nose or use a chest mount for POV sessions.

Portable power bank (20,000mAh)

Amazon

For recharging at the beach. Useful if staying in budget surf hostels.

Universal travel adaptor (Type C)

Amazon

Indonesia uses Type C (European) plugs.

🎒 Bag Setup

Boardbag (double or triple travel)

Amazon

Fits 2–3 boards. Double or triple bags provide more protection on long-haul flights to Bali.

Daypack (20–25L)

Amazon

For walks to breaks and carrying water, wax, and reef kit. Keep it simple — no laptop needed.

Dry bag (10L)

Amazon

For keys, phone, and towel on the beach. Essential at Uluwatu where theft is common.

Compression packing cubes

Amazon

Keep clothing organised. Bali laundry is cheap ($1–2 per kg) — pack light.

Bali Surf Packing FAQ

Do I need a wetsuit for Bali surfing?

No — Bali water temperature stays 27–29°C year-round. A short-sleeve rashguard or 1mm top is enough for sun protection. Wetsuits are not needed.

Can I rent a surfboard in Bali?

Yes — boards are available at every surf shop in Kuta, Canggu, and Uluwatu from $5–$15/day. Longboards, shortboards, and funboards are all available. However, bringing your own board ensures you have your preferred shape.

What wax type should I use for Bali?

Use tropical wax (e.g. Sex Wax Tropical or Sticky Bumps Tropical) rated for water above 24°C. Cool or cold waxes will melt off in Bali's heat.

Do I need reef booties for Uluwatu?

Reef booties are recommended for Uluwatu and Padang Padang, especially at low tide when you're walking over sharp coral to enter the water. 1mm split-toe booties are ideal — enough protection without losing board feel.

What should I bring to the cliff at Uluwatu?

Walk down the cave steps with your board, rash vest or shirt, reef booties, and fin key in your pocket. Leave bags and valuables at your villa — monkeys at the temple will steal sunglasses and phones.
