Gion FAQ

Which airport serves Gion, Kyoto?

Gion is served by Kansai International Airport (KIX), approximately 75 minutes by Haruka Express train (JPN 3,600) or 90 minutes by bus. Itami Airport (ITM) is closer at 55 minutes by bus. From Tokyo, the Shinkansen to Kyoto Station takes 2h 15min (JPN 13,850).

What is Gion, Kyoto?

Gion is Kyoto's most celebrated historic district — the geisha quarter, lined with 17th-century machiya townhouses along Hanamikoji Street. It is where maiko (apprentice geisha) and geiko (geisha) can still be seen walking to evening engagements. Gion is the heart of traditional Japanese culture and the most photographed street in Japan.

Can you see geisha in Gion?

Yes — early evenings (5–7pm) on Hanamikoji Street are the best time to see maiko and geiko walking between okiya (lodging houses) and ochaya (teahouses). Be respectful — do not block their path, grab them, or photograph without consent. The Miyako Odori dance (April) and Gion Matsuri (July) are the best times for cultural performances.

When is the best time to visit Gion?

Cherry blossom (late March to early April) — Maruyama Park next to Gion is spectacular, but very crowded. Autumn foliage (mid-November) is equally beautiful and slightly less crowded. July brings the Gion Matsuri festival. Avoid Golden Week (late April to early May) — worst crowds of the year.
