January and February are busiest because Europe escapes winter here. Weligama itself spreads surfers out well, while Midigama and Ahangama can get more concentrated at dawn.

🏄 Surfboard Baggage Rules

Best Airlines
SriLankan Airlines and Middle East carriers are the easiest full-service options into Colombo. Budget carriers from Kuala Lumpur and Singapore can still work if you pre-book sports gear.
Avg Cost
$35–90 each way, depending on carrier and bag size.
💡 Tip: Weligama has plenty of decent longboards, mid-lengths, and soft-tops to rent, so newer surfers can often skip bringing a board entirely.

About Weligama Surfing

Weligama is the easiest gateway into Sri Lanka's south-coast surf circuit. The bay itself is ideal for beginners and longboarders, while nearby Midigama, Ahangama, and Rams offer faster reef and point-style waves for surfers stepping up. The season runs when the east coast goes quiet, making South Sri Lanka a natural November-to-April counter-season play for Asia-based travellers. Boutique stays, train-linked beach towns, and easy van transfers from Colombo keep the logistics simple.

✨ Luxury Path

Boutique surf villas and design hotels around Ahangama and Cape Weligama make this an easy surf-plus-wellness base with a higher-end feel than most of Asia.

💰 Budget Path

Backpacker guesthouses and surf hostels start around $12–25/night, with scooter rentals and board hire everywhere along the main road.

Surf Camps & Schools

South Sri Lanka has strong women-focused camps, progression retreats, and longboard weeks. Packages often include airport transfer, daily coaching, yoga, and video review.

Tip: Book surf camps at least 4–6 weeks in advance during peak season — the best schools fill up quickly, especially around competitions and swell events.
